If this year you will spend the winter holidays away from family and friends because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but still want to have something to do remotely with them, Among Us is perfect for that. It’s a free, multiplayer mobile game that’s much more fun than having political discussions with family members at Christmas Eve dinner.
There have been a lot of memes about the game lately, which involve colorful figures, dressed in space suits. These are the players among Us, which has grown in popularity in recent months.
Among Us is a social multiplayer online game from the developer InnerSloth, similar to Mafia or Werewolf. You can play with four to 10 people – either people you know or online with strangers.
In the game, you are a member of the crew, aboard a spaceship, trying to keep your entire ship and return to Earth with your crew. But a crew member has been replaced by a parasitic alien who wants to eliminate the rest of the crew before the ship gets home.
The problem is that the imposter looks the same as everyone else, because he has changed his form into a human one, and will sabotage the ship, sneak through the vents, deceive fellow players and try to manipulate others. All in an attempt to go undetected and kill the rest of the crew.
Meanwhile, crew members must perform tasks to repair the ship and cannot talk to each other unless a death is reported or after a player presses the alarm button. Then, the surviving crew can openly debate via chat who they think is the imposter and then vote for everyone. If the imposter is eliminated, the crew wins. But if the group accidentally votes for a crew member, everyone goes back to maintaining the ship, until another body is found and they vote again. It’s all about deduction and attention to detail.
